Egypt says no peace summit confirmed

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Mahir on Monday denied that there was any agreement to hold a proposed Arab-African summit meeting on Sudan (in line with the Libyan-Egyptian peace initiative), the Middle East News Agency reported on Tuesday. Mahir told diplomatic editors in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, that he had no information on confirmed plans for such a meeting, the report said. Senior Sudanese government officials were reported to have announced on 3 August that an Afro-Arab peace summit would be held in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, in September, in an attempt to end Sudan’s 18 year-old civil war. The official news agency, SUNA, quoted the presidential political adviser, Qutbi al-Mahdi, as saying: “The Afro-Arab summit is a good step to engage all the nations concerned with the Sudan peace process to reaching a regionally accepted solution.”
