Assembly adopts resolution on conflict prevention

The UN General Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution on the prevention of armed conflict, in which it drew attention to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s 7 June report in the matter, and asked that the various organisations addressed in that report make recommendations to the Assembly on how to proceed. In particular, the Assembly called on governments, regional and subregional organisations, and UN agencies to consider the recommendations addressed to them, and to inform the Assembly - preferably in its next session - on the views of how to implement them. It also invited relevant civil society actors to consider the report and make recommendations. [For more details - including the 10 principles which should guide the UN’s future approach to conflict prevention, according to Annan’s recommendations, see separate IRIN report of 22 June at: http://www.reliefweb.int/IRIN/cea/countrystories/other/20010622.phtml]
