Humanitarian focus for “Golden Spear” meeting

Government officials and military leaders from 11 countries in eastern and central Africa and the Horn are scheduled to meet from Tuesday to Thursday (24-26 July) in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, to discuss humanitarian crisis prevention and management in the region. Gathering at the second “Golden Spear Symposium”, hosted by the Kenyan government and the US military’s Central Command, the delegates are scheduled to “devise strategies and develop mechanisms for preventing and responding to humanitarian issues and natural disasters”, according to a press release issued by the US embassy in Nairobi. The “Golden Spear” initiative is a senior-level forum for regional leaders to discuss strategic issues of mutual interest in an effort to enhance cooperation. Representatives from the newly launched Africa Union (formerly the OAU), the East Africa Community, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the regional Inter-Governmental Authority on Development are expected to attend.
