Taylor frees three alleged coup plotters

President Charles Taylor has granted “executive clemency” to three men convicted of plotting to overthrow his government nearly three years ago, PANA reported news organisations in the capital Monrovia as saying. Former presidential adviser Bai Gbala, former senator James Chelley and former deputy justice minister David Gbala, were all pardoned on Friday, Taylor’s private radio station reported. Taylor said he freed them to “foster reconciliation”. They were among a small group arrested after a gun battle in Monrovia in September 1998 between government forces and members of a former civil war faction known as Ulimo-J.
