Opposition Tutsi spokesman reportedly under house arrest

Alphonse Rugambarara, spokesman for the pro-Tutsi opposition parties, has reportedly been placed under house arrest. He told AFP on Thursday that large numbers of gendarmes had been deployed around his house, ahead of a planned day of protest against the Pretoria decision appointing President Pierre Buyoya as first leader of the transition. The G-6 group of parties had called for work stoppages on Thursday and Friday. They also said they would boycott a regional summit, due to take place in Arusha, Tanzania, on Monday. Residents of Bujumbura told IRIN that the call for work stoppages had failed, and people were going about their business as usual.
