FLC leader arrested after troops ran wild in Bangui

Jean-Pierre Bemba’s Front pour la liberation du Congo (FLC) rebel movement in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) announced last week it had arrested one of its members whose troops were seen looting after helping to crush the May coup in the CAR. In an interview with AFP, Bemba said the officer was arrested for losing authority over of his men. “The military council will decide on the fate of this commander,” AFP quoted Bemba as saying, noting that he would probably receive a prison sentence. A 700-strong FLC battalion was sent to Bangui to quell the uprising, and withdrew a week later after CAR President Ange-Felix Patasse had fully regained control.
