Police quell Lusaka by-election violence

    JOHANNESBURG

    Riot police have been patrolling parts of the Zambian capital, Lusaka, following violence between rival political supporters in the run-up to a by-election on Tuesday, the BBC reported. According to the report, police warned that further clashes would bring more arrests.

    Channel Africa reported that clashes between ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) and opposition party supporters began late on Friday and continued through the weekend. The report quoted police as saying several people were injured while government vehicles were smashed during the clashes. The by-election was called after former Zambian vice-president Christon Tembo, who was member of parliament for the area, resigned from the MMD to join the new opposition Forum for Democracy and Development.
