The World Bank approved a US $24.56-million credit for Chad on Thursday for a project to reduce the spread of HIV and rapid population growth. The project aims to ease the impact of these phenomena on the economy and social services in one of the poorest countries in the world, the World Bank reported.
The money would be used to replenish an existing fund that finances programmes that support condom distribution, improve the capacities of government ministries, and promote the national population policy.
This is Chad’s second population project. The first was also financed by the Bank in 1995. It helped set up population monitoring commissions, train some 40 NGOs in project development and management, and conduct HIV/AIDS education and prevention drives.
