Ugandan army to keep 2,000 soldiers in Congo

Some 2,000 Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers will remain in the DRC when its 65th battalion withdraws from the northeastern DRC town of Bafwasende this week, the Ugandan government-owned ‘New Vision’ newspaper reported on Wednesday. Army Commander Major General Jeje Odongo told ‘The New Vision’ that the army had completely withdrawn from Butembo and Kanyabayonga, but that a small unit remained in Lisala. “The Lisala group is quite small and will soon withdraw,” he was quoted as saying. The army announced yesterday that about 700 soldiers from Bafwasende will begin walking the 400 km to Beni on Wednesday.
