New party applies for recognition

Mauritiania’s Union des forces democratiques (Union of Democratic Forces) - led by former President Mokhtar Ould Daddah - has applied for registration as the Rally of Democratic Forces (Rassemblement des forces democratiques or RFD), Radio France International reported on Wednesday. The report said the party - banned last year by the current government - had submitted to the Interior Ministry the documentation required for its transformation into a new party. Ould Daddah, who was overthrown in 1978, has been living in exile in France. He plans to return to Mauritania on 17 July but does not intend to return to politics, the report said, quoting aides.
