Concern for food insecurity

The drought-affected region of Anseba, Eritrea, still lacks adequate rainfall, the World Food Programme (WFP) said in a weekly emergency report dated 29 June. Only the area around Keren has received adequate rains, the report said. “This is increasing risks of losing another cropping season and further exacerbating food insecurity.” Some “minimal ploughing activities” had started in war-affected regions in the west, where displaced populations were returning. However, there is still concern that drought and displacement will seriously affect food production for Eritrea, particularly as the main agricultural region in the west had been affected.
