End of ICRC aid operation in Nyunzu town, Katanga province

Last week, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) completed the second phase of its aid operation in the town of Nyunzu, in the DRC’s southern Katanga, the organisation announced on Thursday. The aid to the local population included foodstuffs (beans, flour, maize, oil and salt) as well as soap and buckets. Over a period of two months, 320 mt of food and other relief supplies were provided to some 27,000 people. According to ICRC representatives who evaluated the harvest of food crops in the region, the nutritional status of the population has improved with the recent decrease in hostilities, thereby allowing people to cultivate more land and to avoid being completely dependent on humanitarian aid.
