Parliament grants amnesty to election troublemakers

Benin’s parliament voted on Monday for a law granting amnesty to perpetrators of “acts and deeds committed between 4 February and 4 April” of this year, including penal and disciplinary infractions, AFP reported. However, the law excludes those guilty of homicide, woundings and damage to property, AFP said. Presidential elections in late March saw the re-election of President Mathieu Kerekou with 84 percent of the votes. The period immediately before and after the polls were marked by acts of violence and vandalism.
