Rebel group calls for “immediate release of detainees”

    NAIROBI
    In a statement released on Monday, the Bunia-based Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-Kisangani) demanded the immediate release of “all detainees arrested for having expressed opinions different from those of [Mouvement pour la liberation du Congo - MLC leader] Jean Pierre Bemba”. RCD-Kisangani officials Philip Mbilizi and Gilbert Ndale have been detained at the Bunia central prison since their 29 May arrest by Bemba. The statement called on Bemba “to leave the RCD-Kisangani territory which he is controlling illegally for economic purposes without the consent of both the RCD-Kisangani and the population”. It also urged Uganda, which backs Bemba, “to stop Bemba’s unprecedented desire to eliminate RCD-Kisangani presence”.
