Poor security blamed for stadium tragedy

Inadequate safety measures and poor structural planning have been blamed for the Accra soccer stadium tragedy on 9 May in which at least 126 people died, news organisations reported. An interim report on the incident has been handed to Ghanaian President John Kufuor who warned that tough action would be taken against those responsible. The disaster occurred at the end of a match in which home side Accra Hearts of Oak defeated arch rivals Asante Kotoko 2-1. Kotoko fans destroyed plastic stadium seats, causing police to fire tear gas in to the crowd. This caused a stampede for the locked exits in which many people were crushed to death.
