New query over ICTR defence investigators

The Rwandan by-weekly ‘New Times’ newspaper has this week named three defence investigators at the International Criminal Tribunal in Rwanda (ICTR) who, it alleges, are close relatives of three detainees on trial at the Tribunal. The allegations - against defence investigators for Elizaphan Ntakirutimana, Pauline Nyiramasuhuko and Arsene Ntahobali - came in the wake of Rwandan government allegations that the ICTR had people it suspected of genocide on its payroll, and that some were using false identity papers to work there, the ‘Internews’ agency reported. It also cited defence investigators who dismissed the allegations as unfair, saying that the Rwandan government had been known to “arbitrarily” place people’s names on its list of genocide suspects, and that such allegations were a form of harassment against people who did support the current regime in Kigali.
