Herdsmen fleeing drought to Uganda

Herdsmen in Rwanda’s northeastern prefecture of Umutara are fleeing to the neighbouring districts of Uganda in search of water and pasture for their herds, the Rwanda News Agency (RNA) reported. It quoted a sub-prefect in charge of legal and administrative affairs in the Umutara prefecture, Wilson Rutaganira, as saying that 15 families were found “illegally” crossing to Uganda with their cattle. It said many more have reportedly “successfully” crossed to Ugandan and Tanzania. RNA noted that hundreds of families have migrated from famine-hit Bugesera to Umutara in search of food. They have settled in the communes of Rukara, Murambi, Bugaragara, Muvumba and Kagitumba.
