Netherlands backs improvement of judicial system

The Dutch government has donated 150 million Rwandan francs (about US $326,797) for the development and improvement of the Rwandan judicial system, Rwandan News Agency (RNA) reported on Friday. Chief justice Simeon Rwagasore said the funds would be used to improve judicial services, especially the ‘gacaca’ (traditional courts) system. “Improvement of living conditions in different prisons throughout the country will not be left out,” RNA quoted Rwagasore as saying. Lodewijk van den Akker of the Dutch embassy in Kigali said the donation was intended to contribute to the establishment of the rule of law, improvement of prison conditions and the strengthening of the judicial system.
