US donates $21.4 million to fight hunger

The United States has donated US $21.4 million in aid to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to help fight hunger, AP reported on Thursday. The donation includes 21,500 metric tonnes of flour and corn and 3,000 tonnes of vegetable oil that will be distributed by the World Food Programme (WFP). A WFP information officer said the aid would be used to set up food-for-work programmes and would directly benefit 1.4 million people throughout the DRC, including many who have been displaced during nearly three years of war. The conflict has severed vital trade routes and blocked farm production in much of the DRC, cutting food and medicine supplies for millions of civilians.
