Bizimungu urges Kagame to lift party ban

Former Rwandan president Pasteur Bizimungu has called on his successor, Paul Kagame, to remove obstacles stopping him from setting up his own political party, the BBC reported on Wednesday. In an open letter, Bizimungu said the directives preventing his Democratic Party for Renewal (PDR) from holding a constituent assembly should be countermanded. When he announced the formation of his party two weeks ago, Bizimungu was briefly placed under house arrest and all his privileges as a former president were withdrawn. The government has said the new party is aimed at “destabilising the country”.
