Opposition contests results of polls

Chad’s parties are now awaiting the verdict of the constitutional court, which has two weeks to rule on an opposition appeal for the annulment of presidential elections held on 20 May. Incumbent President Idriss Deby won the polls with more than 67 percent of the votes, but his six rivals filed an appeal for the annulment of the polls, which they said were rigged. The announcement of his victory sparked unrest last week, but calm has returned to Ndjamena pending the verdict of the Conseil Constitutionel, law professor Dionko Maounde told IRIN on Monday. However a women’s march against Deby’s victory is scheduled for this week, Maounde said.
