US bans conflict diamonds

    ABIDJAN
    US President George W. Bush has prohibited the import of all rough diamonds from Liberia, the US State Department reported. Liberia is under UN sanctions for dealing in Sierra Leonean diamonds and otherwise supporting Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels. However, Liberia continues to deny it has diamond dealings with the RUF. Bush’s order prohibits any person in the US from attempting to evade the ban. He has empowered the Secretary of the Treasury and other officers and agencies of the government “to take all appropriate measures within their authority to carry out the provisions of this order”.
