US Secretary of State expected in Mali

US Secretary of State Colin Powell is expected to arrive in Mali on Wednesday on the first leg of a six-day tour of four African countries throughout which health, especially AIDS, bilateral cooperation and development issues would represent the key issues, a US Embassy official in Mali told IRIN on Tuesday. The highlight of Powell’s one day visit would be a meeting with President Alpha Oumar Konare on “general issues of interest to both countries”, Information Officer Robin Yeager said. Powell is also slated to visit a medical centre funded by Mali, the US government and US universities, as well as a military training exercise, Yeager added. Powell, who is on his first visit to Africa since being appointed secretary of state, is also to travel to Kenya, Uganda and South Africa.
