Danish chewing gum firm reopens

The Danish chewing gum maker Dandy on Monday reopened its factory in Zimbabwe, which had closed down after being threatened by war veterans, board chairman Holger Bagger-Soerensen was quoted as saying.

Bagger-Soerensen said the decision to restart operations after a shutdown of around two weeks had been taken after assurances given by Home Affairs Minister John Nkomo and his foreign affairs counterpart, Stan Mudenge, to the Danish government. “We believe that (president) Robert Mugabe and his government want to restore order in the country,” Bagger-Soerensen said. “The question is whether it is possible to control the war veterans, but we hope it will be possible.” Nkomo last week ordered a halt to the company invasions, which saw hundreds of firms attacked since early April by war veterans.
