Opposition wins key mayoral race

Zimbabwe’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) won a key mayoral race at the weekend in Masvingo, a provincial capital, news reports said on Monday. Reports quoted a MDC statement as saying that of the estimated 27,000 registered voters, only slightly more than 7,000 people cast ballots in the weekend poll, with the MDC candidate, Alois Chaimiti, winning by a margin of more than 2,000 votes. State radio gave the official tally as 4,532 ballots for the MDC and 2,188 for the ruling ZANU-PF. President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party had campaigned intensely in the race, sending several key ministers and hundreds of pro-government militants to whip up support for its candidate Jacob Chademana.
