Armed police raid MDC offices

Armed police raided the Harare offices of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) president Morgan Tsvangirai on Thursday and arrested four members of his close security team and a member of the public. The independent ‘Daily News’ reported that the raid came soon after Tsvangirai won a High Court election petition, in which he challenged Kenneth Manyonda’s victory in Buhera South constituency in last June’s parliamentary vote. Police were quoted in the report as saying that they would charge the men under section 30 of the Law and Order (Maintenance) Act. They did not elaborate. MDC lawyer Innocent Chagonda of Atherstone and Cook, could not determine the charges the group faced and was not allowed entry into the interrogation room where they were being quizzed, the report said.
