Lusaka teachers threaten to strike

Teachers in Lusaka Province have threatened not to go back to work after the school calendar commences on 14 May if the government does not award them a 100 percent salary increase, the ‘Post’ reported on Wednesday. Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) Lusaka Province secretary Michael Chisompe said the resolution was passed after consultations between the union and the teachers in all the four districts of the province. He said the standards had fallen in the education sector due to the meagre salaries that the teaching staff had continued to get. The union has also called for the re-introduction of housing allowances for unhoused teachers as 75 percent of ZNUT members were not accommodated.
