Canal to be built to save Lake Chad

A 120-km canal connected to the two basins of the River Congo is to be built soon to prevent Lake Chad from completely drying up, AFP reported the executive secretary of the Commission for Lake Chad Basin, Ahmed Sani Adamou, as saying on Thursday. The lake has receded by 20 km in the past few years and this has brought about population movement, destroyed much of the vegetation and fauna, and caused the surrounding area to be one of Chad’s poorest. The commission, which comprises Niger, Chad, Nigeria and Cameroon, was created to find ways to prevent the lake from drying up.
