DRC refugees ask for asylum in Malawi

Malawian police said 32 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were refusing to return home and had asked for asylum, SAPA-AFP reported on Tuesday. "The government is taking precautions as some of them might be criminals disguised as asylum seekers," police spokesperson Oliver Soko was quoted as saying. The refugees arrived last week and were being kept in Chitipa district in northern Malawi, near the Tanzanian border, and were being looked after by the Malawian Red Cross at a community centre, according to the report. Malawi already hosts about 5,000 refugees, mainly from the troubled Rwanda, DRC and Burundi, the report said.
