UNITA kills 14 in attacks

    JOHANNESBURG

    UNITA rebels in Angola are reported to have killed seven government troops and captured fifty others in attacks over the weekend, LUSA reported on Tuesday, quoting a private radio station. The Roman Catholic radio, Ecclesia, said the dawn attack took place on Sunday in Dombo Grande, in Benguela Province, 200km south of the capital Luanda.

    But Angolan government radio reported on Monday that the Angolan army repulsed the UNITA raid on the town and that the rebels fled leaving behind weapons and equipment. Government radio gave no further details. Ecclesia reported that seven civilians were killed in a separate attack when UNITA rebels stormed a camp for displaced persons in neighbouring Huila province. The guerrillas have been fighting the government army since Angola gained independence in 1975.
