Belgium welcomes new government

Belgium, the former colonial power, hailed the announcement of the new government. In a statement, Foreign Minister Louis Michel said he had noted with “great interest and satisfaction” the formation of the new cabinet. “This change is in keeping with a firmly reformist approach, in line with the hopes expressed by the international community and Belgium in particular,” he said. “President Kabila has chosen new men in order to ensure the pacification and reconstruction of the DRC. He will enjoy the support of Belgium in accordance with the programme put in place by the new government.”
