Torrential rain kills 11

At least 11 people were killed and over 1,000 people displaced in Angola’s capital Luanda last weekend following heavy torrential rains in the city on Saturday, agencies reported. According to local media, eight people were killed at dawn on Sunday in the Boavista District when their houses collapsed due to a landslide triggered by the heavy rains. Meanwhile, more than 1,000 people were dislodged by the rains in Luanda’s satellite city of Cacuaco, where the depth of water in the street exceeded one metre. Luanda has an estimated population of 3.8 million and over half of them are displaced people from rural areas or other provinces, many of whom built their shelters on clay slopes that are easily destroyed by rains.
