Deportation order against genocide suspect halted in Canada

A judge in Canada has ordered a halt to a deportation order against a Rwandan politician accused of inciting the 1994 genocide, the BBC reported on Friday. He said there was not enough evidence to implicate the suspect, Leon Mugesera, a former adviser to the Hutu government at the time. Justice Mark Hadon called on the immigration board to reconsider the case. Mugesera is accused of making a speech in 1992 - two years before the genocide - that was widely interpreted as a call for Hutus to kill Tutsis, but his lawyers have disputed that the remarks were inflammatory. The deportation order against Mugesera was first made in 1996 when the Canadian authorities said they discovered he had lied on his entry papers.
