Annan urges Museveni, Kagame to continue withdrawal

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan meanwhile urged Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame to continue pulling their troops out of the DRC, in accordance with the provisions of the Lusaka peace accord. In a statement issued in Nairobi on Tuesday, following telephone discussions with the two leaders, he assured them of the UN’s commitment to the “rapid deployment of military observers”. Kagame and Museveni reaffirmed their determination to effectively pursue the DRC peace process “provided Joseph Kabila’s government also lived up to its undertakings”. “They also pledged their mutual cooperation in the quest to restore peace and stability in the entire Great Lakes region and stated that any bilateral differences would be resolved through peaceful negotiations,” the statement said.
