Hunzvi under siege

Controversial war veterans leader Chenjerai Hunzvi is once again facing a leadership challenge from within his movement, the 'Zimbabwe Independent' said on Friday. Hunzvi allegedly angered some members last week when he tried to dissolve the Harare provincial executive of the veterans' association, following a similar move against the executive in Bulawayo. Hunzvi, "appeared to be running out of friends ahead of the crucial war veterans national congress to be held in Harare around June," the newspaper reported, as some senior leaders rallied behind war veterans Harare province chairman, Douglas Mahiya. "We would like to remind Hunzvi that the war veterans association is a welfare body and not Hunzvi's private property. That is why we have a constitution and Hunzvi is not immune to it," Mahiya was quoted as saying. The 'Zimbabwe Independent' reported that Hunzvi's term of office expired last month and alleged he was looking for pliant provincial executives to enable him to amend the constitution at the June congress.
