UK pulls out army trainers

Britain is recalling a team of military trainers seconded to President Robert Mugabe's army. Zimbabwe's 'Financial Gazette' reported on Thursday that Britain, which has had trainers in the country for the past 21 years, was withdrawing its people in protest against the Zimbabwean government's expulsion of foreign journalists, attacks on the judiciary and its failure to restore law and order. The newspaper said the planned withdrawal of the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT) was part of a variety of new, tougher measures London was adopting against its former colony, and would mark the end of defence cooperation between the two countries. Britain last year slapped an arms embargo on Harare.
