Child mortality rates down

The death rate among children under five years in Katkama refugee camp in Guinea has dropped from 3.2 per 10,000 in between 12 and 17 February to 2:10,000, WHO reported on Tuesday. Deaths among children who arrived at Katkama from Nyaedou, farther south, came under control following the establishment of a second health post, closer supervision by NGO staff and the distribution of high protein biscuits, WHO said. However, the agency was concerned about 13,000 people at the nearby Kountaya refugee camp who might contract mosquito-borne diseases with the onset of the approaching rainy season. WHO reported that the refugees did not have mosquito nets.
