Constitutional referendum postponed until December

Senegal has postponed a constitutional referendum from 27 November until 10 December, the state-run ‘Le Soleil’ newspaper in Dakar reported on Friday. The interior minister said he called for the delay to make time for consultations among members of the Cabinet. In Senegal, the Interior Ministry organizes elections. President Abdoulaye Wade announced on Monday the referendum to adopt a new constitution that aims to establish a “semi-presidential” administration with a larger role for the prime minister. It would also allow the president to dissolve the National Assembly, which is still dominated by the former ruling Parti socialiste.
