Judge orders eviction of war veterans

Justice Rita Makarau, newly-appointed to the High Court, has ordered Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri to evict war veterans and ZANU-PF supporters from commercial farms they have forcibly occupied in Hwedza, southeast of Harare, since February last year, 'The Daily News' said on Thursday. Makarau was quoted as saying: "It is ordered that all persons illegally occupying farms in Hwedza commercial farming district and all persons occupying farms through them be ordered to vacate the farms forthwith. The deputy sheriff for Marondera is empowered to enlist the assistance of the Zimbabwe Republic Police if the assistance is considered necessary to enforce the eviction orders." Reports said that Makarau's ruling follows an urgent application by the Hwedza Farmers' Association directing Chihuri to order the police to evict farm invaders and make way for organised farming.
