Publisher convicted of defamation

The acting publisher of ‘Le Temps’, a Chadian weekly, received a six-month suspended sentence on Thursday for an article alleging that relatives of President Idriss Deby had been involved in several coup attempts in Chad, AFP reported. Mickael Didama was also fined the equivalent of US $35 and ordered to pay the plaintiff, General Mahammat Ali Abdallah, damages worth US $7,000 dollars. Didama, who has appealed, was found guilty of defaming Abdallah, administrator of the southern province of Logone Occidental and a nephew of Deby’s.
