Sharia law execution reported

A man accused of killing another man was reported executed by an Islamic court in Mogadishu on Friday, 5 January. Farah Warsame Halane was sentenced to death, in accordance with Sharia law, after he admitted to killing Abdi Muhammed Hade, the Mogadishu daily ‘Ayaamaha’ reported on Saturday. The execution was carried out in Mogadishu’s main livestock market and was watched by a large crowd, according to local reports. The Islamic court that carried out the execution belongs to the Duduble sub-clan of Hawiye, according to local Somali sources. It gave the victim’s family a choice of whether to accept ‘Diya’ blood money, and spare the life of the accused, or opt for the execution, Sheikh Ibrahim, a Duduble, told IRIN. The family of the victim opted for the execution. Friday’s was reported to be the fifth execution by this particular Islamic court.
