President calls for peace

Chadian President Idriss Deby has appealed to the Mouvement pour la democratie et la justice au Tchad (MDJT), a dissident group, to end the two-year conflict with the government, BBC reported on Tuesday. Deby’s call for a ceasefire and reconciliation follows recent clashes in the north of the country in which opposing forces suffered high casualties. The MDJT, which has been demanding that Deby resign, had announced that it had killed 413 government soldiers from 18-29 December 2000, while government authorities said that its forces had killed 120 enemy fighters. The government has since October 2000 fielded troops to fight the dissidents in Tibesti, a desert region bordering Libya and Niger.
