Kabila to inaugurate new assembly

DRC President Laurent-Desire Kabila is to inaugurate the new unelected national assembly on 25 July in the southern city of Lubumbashi, according to a government statement. He announced the 240-member assembly by presidential decree on 1 July. A further 60 members will be appointed by Kabila to make up the total of 300 deputies. The role of the new assembly will be “to examine the draft constitution, elaborate laws on political institutions and oversee government activities”, the statement said. The political opposition and rebel groups have condemned the new assembly, saying only the national dialogue can set the transitional institutions.
