More funds to fight malaria

The South African government has made available an additional US $3 million to fight malaria in the KwaZulu-Natal province, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Tuesday. The province’s Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, said the latest malaria control programme launched in the province brings to nearly US $6 million funds earmarked for anti-malaria projects. He said he was optimistic that the aggressive approach, supported by a tri-lateral agreement between South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland, would save lives. Mkhize noted that heavy rains earlier this year, the hot weather conditions, and cross-border movement between South Africa and Mozambique have contributed to the rapid spread of malaria in the province.
