Former information minister denies genocide charges

A former Rwandan minister of information, Eliezer Niyitegeka, on Monday pleaded not guilty to ten counts of genocide and crimes against humanity in a fresh indictment, the Internews service reported. He had been initially charged with six counts including conspiracy to commit genocide, genocide, murder, extermination and inhuman acts. The new charges include an alternative charge of complicity in genocide, direct and public incitement to genocide and rape. Rwandan Prosecutor General Gerald Gahima told IRIN that the government is following Niyitegeka’s case with keen interest “because he is one of the major planners of the genocide”. “He should get the maximum sentence, but the courts will have the final say in the trial,” Gahima said.
