President Thabo Mbeki is to lead the South African delegation to the 36th ordinary session of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) heads of government summit next week, the Foreign Affairs Department said on Monday. The summit will take place in Lome, Togo, from 10-12 July, and will also be a summit of the African Economic Community (AEC), the department said in a statement. The summit will be preceded by the 72nd ordinary session of the OAU/AEC Council of Ministers from 6 to 8 July, which is to be attended by Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and her director-general, Sipho Pityana. The foreign ministry said the heads of state summit would focus on three main themes: The challenges of Aids in Africa, security and stability within the context of the Algiers Declaration in making 2000 a Year of Peace and Stability in Africa; and regional cooperation and the integration and the challenge of globalisation.
