Security Council delays diamond discussions

The UN Security Council has delayed until midweek consultations on sanctions against illegal diamonds from Sierra Leone, UN sources said. Bishop Biguzzi of the northern town of Makeni said on Friday that an embargo on the acquisition of rough diamonds illegally exported from Sierra Leone would be “very positive and should be encouraged,” the Missionary News Agency (MISNA) reported. He said it was a “known fact” that the money raised through the smuggling of diamonds was being used to buy weapons for the war in Sierra Leone.
