Government to recruit 120,000 teachers in four years

The Nigerian government will spend US $850 million over the next eight years to recruit and train 120,000 teachers and build 28,000 new classrooms each year, AFP reported on Wednesday, quoting Information Minister Jerry Gana. He said 30,000 teachers would be recruited each year for four years to implement the government’s Universal Basic Education Plan and reverse declining standards. Nigeria’s school population, estimated at about 19 million, is expected to reach 26 million by 2005, AFP said.
