Two tonnes of drugs destroyed

Two tonnes of drugs were symbolically burned on Monday by the Senegalese police, AFP reported. A police official said the amount destroyed was tiny compared to the 108 mt seized in joint operations by the police and gendarmes during 1999. The police questioned 835 traffickers last year, according to AFP. The news agency also said seven “mules” died in custody in less than three months after swallowing drugs to avoid detection. Senegal aims to strengthen its fight against drug traffickers and consumers, AFP reported General Mamadou Niang, minister of the interior, as saying during the burning ceremony.
