Reconciliation meeting in Bunyakiri

Humanitarian sources say a reconciliation meeting took place in Bunyakiri, South Kivu, earlier this month. Among those taking part were the Mayi-Mayi militia, members of the Bami and Batembo ethnic groups, commanders of the governing Rassemblement congolais pour la democratie (RCD-Goma), along with allied commanders. The meeting ended with a recommendation that the Mayi-Mayi and RCD should stop attacking each other, and allied troops should stop inciting the Mayi-Mayi. All the combatants instead were encouraged to track down the Rwandan Interahamwe militia. Analysts believe the Bunyakiri meeting could encourage further reconciliation attempts between opposing groups in South Kivu.
